EFL Transfer Bulletin #16 – Louie Barry's a Blade, Alfie May's a Terrier, and Josh Windass & Lewis O'Brien join Wrexham
The latest done deals in the EFL, and in focus: the EFL International Departure Lounge.
The EFL Transfer Bulletin is written by Ali Maxwell, George Elek, Huw Davies, Sam Parry, Matt Watts, Craig Bradley, Ed Stratmann and Riley Roberts, with the help of the NTT20 Squad.
One week today…
The EFL season starts in seven days. Doubtless, the majority of clubs still have business to do. We’re getting into the ‘trickle-down’ phase now, when moves in the Premier League have knock-on effects down the pyramid. Quite often, that takes on a distinctly loan-heavy flavour. There are a few of those in today’s bulletin, and hundreds more transfers to come – we will cover ’em all.
I write this from Stansted Mountfitchet, the UK’s fourth-most internet-friendly town and home to a bloody great airport…
Short story long: it’s got me thinking about departures. Now, that’s something we only cover by happenstance on NTT20.COM; a trade between two EFL clubs. But the EFL International flight is real. Buckle up…
Kyle Hudlin left Newport and has found pastures new in Thép Xanh Nam Định, Vietnam. Aaron Ramsey has tipped up in Mexico City for Pumas UNAM. And Benjamin Tanimu, who continued his journey from Tanzania via a short-and-oh-so-sweet Crawley stopover, has ended up in Fez, Morocco.
Elsewhere, there were some biggies. Southampton’s Kamaldeen Sulemana swapped the south coast for Serie A glamour with Atalanta in Italy. This week, Hoffenheim carved a Wouter Burger-sized hole out of Stoke’s midfield, and not so long ago, Sheffield United watched Vini Souza head to Wolfsburg, so that’s two to Germany. All three players were arguably too good for the Championship, and so for their former clubs, there’s a ceiling on their replaceability.
Speaking of which: a pastel de nata for Norwich fans’ thoughts on Borja Sainz moving to Porto in Portugal. While the club have been proactive in signing replacements, particularly Mathias Kvistgaarden, you can’t just buy 18 goals. Or can you? We’ll see.
Still, my favourite departees this window have left two South Yorkshire clubs. Mallik Wilks (ex-Sheffield Wednesday) and Jonson Clarke-Harris (formerly of Rotherham) will be lining up for Pendikspor on the margins of Istanbul, Turkey. It’s a long way from mushy peas, that, and I can’t wait to write up their eventual return in one of these bulletins, one day soon.
