In summer, I shared one of my coldest pre-season takes with the NTT20 Squad. At the time, I was underwhelmed by Middlesbrough’s managerial appointment, lukewarm on the make-up of their squad and concerned for their prospects this season, especially if Rav van den Berg and Hayden Hackney were both to leave. Only one of them – RVB – has gone. And when the facts change, I’m happy to change with them.
What has shifted my mind? Put simply: the signings. Alfie Jones provided necessary defensive depth, Abdoulaye Kanté looks more for the future than the now; neither moved the needle. But then came Callum Brittain. For me, he’s one of the best attacking right-backs in the Championship. Then Sontje Hansen, a player I’ve long touted for a move out of the Eredivisie. And now 18-year-old Norwegian Sverre Nypan, one of the most prodigious footballing talents in the world, joins on a season-long loan from Manchester City. Things have hotted up.
