Transfer Siesta
22 signings in this bulletin means ‘only’ 49 transfers in the last week across our 72 beloved clubs. Matt Watts put it well in the NTT20.COM TRANSFER BULLETIN WhatsApp group:
We’re somewhere between the initial flurry and the “Sh*t, the season starts next weekend!” 😂
The EFL transfer window is taking a siesta after stuffing its face with pastries in late June, followed by the lunchtime cured meats and cheeses of the last few weeks.
The freebies and easy deals have been done, and now we’re at the stage where trickier trades are inching along - many of them contingent on other deals elsewhere: on Premier League clubs releasing loanees, on clubs admitting to themselves that they don’t, actually, have better options available to them and that they do, actually, really need a recognised left-back before the season kicks off.
I always find fascinating the battle between getting your business done early and staying patient in order to be in a position to make smart manoeuvres later in August, when a whole host of tasty morsels are waiting on the dessert menu. Fill yourself up with bread, starters and mains, and there’s no room for cheesecake.
The very best recruitment teams demonstrate a disciplined balance that comes from diligence, planning and atomic good habits, and are able to pace themselves throughout the banquet, leaving room for dessert and a nightcap.
Right, I’m hungry now. Shall we get on with it?
Championship
“If this 19-year-old can make his mark against a midfield of Rodri & Co. then he should be able to handle the Championship…”
David Ozoh (CM) - [Crystal Palace - Derby] - Loan
Palace’s youngest ever Premier League player, David Ozoh, heads out on loan for the first time. The Spanish-born midfielder is technically good… and physically excellent. The 19-year-old also seems like the kind of player/person who will relish playing at a packed-out Pride Park: the most impressive performance of Ozoh’s career to date came against Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Manchester City. If he can make his mark against a midfield of Rodri & Co., he should be able to handle the Championship.
Cody Drameh (RB) - [Leeds - Hull] - Free (compensation)
Championship loans at Cardiff, Luton and Birmingham have all shown that Cody Drameh is a perfectly fine full-back for the level without much suggestion that he’s on the cusp of anything greater. His contract ending at Leeds meant he was gonna be a nice pick-up for someone in the league, and it’s Hull that claim his signature. With Lewie Coyle already in situ, Hull’s right-back slot has some good competition.
Pharrell Brown (LW) - [Fleetwood - Hull] - Undisclosed
A small and energetic left winger, Pharrell Dior Brown is a busy player who makes good angles to get on the ball and will go looking for space. He shows neat and tidy footwork, without electric pace, and also presses well off the ball. Expect the teenager to be in the U21 group at first, or for Hull to find him a loan move before they chuck him in at the Championship deep end.
Liam Roberts (GK) - [Middlesbrough - Millwall] - Free
After the arrival of Lukas Jensen, Liam Roberts becomes Millwall’s second addition between the sticks. The former Northampton keeper spent last season on loan at Barnsley, where he kept eight clean sheets in 40 appearances.
Ian Poveda (RW) - [Leeds - Sunderland] - Free
