Robertson, Souttar, Frabotta – the 29 latest EFL signings
NTT20's Summer Transfer Bulletin brings you every signing in the EFL, in detail, in your inbox, every Monday and Thursday.
The Summer Transfer Bulletin is brought to you by Ali Maxwell, George Elek, Huw Davies, Sam Parry, Craig Bradley and Matt Watts.
Tomorrow…
It all kicks off tomorrow.
How do I know? Well, like you, I’ve spent the last few days consuming the NTT20 1-24 podcasts (as well as the Season Preview Betting Show). Nothing whets my appetite for a new season quite like well-researched picks and predictions.
There’s also been a late frenzy of Fantasy EFL content. Who should I pick? And, more importantly, what should my team name be? Coach Maxwell has been tasked with selecting the NTT20 team ahead of Gameweek 1. I must admit, I’m still getting used to the new format, but I think that #TeamNTT20 will be competitive.
Finally, there has also been an uptick in transfer activity. We had the initial wave, followed by the subsequent lull and, this week, we’ve had the flurry of activity before the season gets underway. Trialists have been signed up, youngsters have been allowed to head out on loan and, with that first fixture just days away, a few fairly drawn-out negotiations have been concluded. Whatever happens this weekend, you can rest assured that every club still has some business that they would like to do, but a poor performance or a chastening result will no doubt force the hand of some more than others.
With the return of these three wonderful leagues, Weekend Notes 2.0 (which is free to all subscribers) will be back on Monday. For the next couple of weeks, the Summer Transfer Bulletins will be released on a weekly basis; dropping into your inbox every Wednesday morning. Then, in the final week of the window… well, that’s still to be revealed but, rest assured, we’ve got you covered!
Thank you for your continued support of all things NTT20. Enjoy this bulletin, enjoy all of the other content that we’ve got coming your way and, most importantly of all, enjoy this weekend.
Championship
Etienne Green (GK) - [Saint-Etienne - Burnley] - Undisclosed
Yes, that's right. Saint-Etienne's Etienne Green. Etienne Green of Les Verts is now un Claret. Born in Colchester, raised in France, Green has a couple of England U21 caps. He's been mostly second choice in his career so far. If James Trafford leaves, he may challenge Vaclav Hladky for the gloves, but still has plenty to prove.
Alex Robertson (CM) - [Man City - Cardiff] - Undisclosed
An excellent technician who can create ‘something out of nothing’, Alex Robertson's arrival in the Welsh capital is an eye-catching transfer. The silky Australian dazzled whilst on loan at Portsmouth last season before he suffered a serious hamstring injury in January. The former Manchester City man can operate in a number of different midfield roles but, wherever Erol Bulut chooses to play him, he should significantly improve Cardiff’s creativity from open play. Robertson’s Uncle, former City stalwart Gavin Rae, helped the Bluebirds beat several other Championship clubs to the 21-year-old’s signature. The deal isn’t a cheap one but, unlike some of Cardiff’s other additions this summer, Robertson has serious sell-on potential down the line.
Rohan Luthra (GK) - [Cardiff - Derby] - Free
Formerly of Crystal Palace and Derby County, 22-year-old Rohan Luthra joins the Rams after a fairly mixed spell while on trial with the club. With a new No.1 yet to arrive, you would imagine that Luthra will end up being the 3rd choice keeper behind a new shot-stopper and Josh Vickers.
Callum Doyle (CB/LB) - [Man City - Norwich] - Loan
After successful loan spells with Sunderland, Coventry and Leicester, Callum Doyle heads to NR1. Despite his tender age, the 20-year-old has made almost 100 league appearances to date. Doyle's ball-playing capabilities, coupled with his versatility, should make him a perfect fit for Johannes Hoff Thorup's style of play.
Kornel Szucs (RB/CB) - [Kecskemeti - Plymouth] - Undisclosed
Szucs has a bit to live up to at Home Park. Argyle have fond feelings towards Hungarian players with Akos Buzsaky, Peter Halmsoi and Krisztian Timar all holding cult hero status at the Devon club. Szuca has a bit of recently departed Dan Scarr about his style. Physically strong, tall and with a great stride length, He isn't the most refined of footballers but he is a 'proper defender'. He has a tendency to try and get in front of his attacker to steal an interception. Will likely play as a tucking-in right-back in a back four that becomes three for Rooney's new-look Plymouth.
Andre Dozzell (CM) - [QPR - Portsmouth] - Free
Dozzell spent the start of the summer trialling at Sheffield United, something the Blades were quite open to bring attention to. Yet it's Pompey who claim the signature of the left-footed midfielder. Former England youth international approaching his peak years with over 125 Championship appearances to his name, to the naked eye it'd be forgivable to think this is a bit of a coup for Portsmouth, but Dozzell has a tendency to underwhelm and has never captured the hearts of supporters. It'll be interesting to see what the feeling becomes towards him at Fratton Park.
Matt Ritchie (RW) - [Newcastle - Portsmouth] - Free
"It's a dream come true. I've always had in my mind that I had unfinished business at the football club." Over 13 years after his departure, academy graduate Matt Ritchie returns to Pompey. The 34-year-old has spent the best part of a decade in the Premier League with Bournemouth and Newcastle. Putting the romance to one side, Ritchie's experience, tenacity and technical quality should make him a good pick-up for a newly promoted Championship side, but his lack of league minutes over the last couple of seasons (just over 150) has to be a concern.
Kaine Kesler-Hayden (RB/RWB) - [Aston Villa - Preston] - Loan
A young player with a long name and a growing reputation, Kaine Kesler-Hayden’s fifth loan takes him to Deepdale. The 21-year-old is an attacking right wing-back; described as a ‘ball carrier who can get fans off their seats’ by Ryan Lowe. Defensively, KKH can still improve, but we’ve seen enough in his previous EFL loans to suggest that this is a good addition for North End.
Harry Souttar (CB) - [Leicester - Sheffield United] - Loan
