How common is it for newly-relegated clubs to get promoted after abandoning their plan A and sacking the manager (e.g. Watford in 20/21 with Ivic)?
I think with the quality they have at the moment all three of these teams would have a good chance of getting promoted if plan A doesn’t work and they bring in a new coach midway through the season.
In the 20-year period we’re discussing, a mid-season appointment by a relegated PL club has won re-promotion on three occasions - which is a lot when you consider that, as mentioned, only four summer appointments managed it (RDM, Allardyce, Silva, Kompany).
The three in question: Watford in 2020-21 as you said, with Xisco Munoz replacing Vlad Ivic in December; Norwich 2014/15, with Alex Neil replacing Neil Adams in January; and - in a different way - Sunderland 2006/07, when Niall Quinn brought in Roy Keane after five matches to replace... himself.
Signing of the summer - Huw Davies to NTT20 Towers.
Lovely stuff Huw
Wonderful stuff - more!
Proper good read this, a great write up!
Bloody brilliant Huw. The condemned wall analogy 🤌🏼
Excellent read!

Good question. And you’re not wrong.
